European Accessibility Act (EAA) Timeline
The European Accessibility Act (Directive 2019/882) introduces mandatory accessibility requirements for essential products and services. Understanding the timeline is critical for compliance.
Key Dates
- June 2019: The Directive entered into force.
- June 28, 2022: Deadline for EU Member States to transpose the Directive into national law.
- June 28, 2025: The EAA takes full effect. From this date, all covered products and services placed on the market must be accessible.
- June 28, 2030: End of the transition period for service providers to ensure their pre-existing services are compliant.
What Needs to Be Compliant by 2025?
By the June 2025 deadline, computers, operating systems, smartphones, banking services, e-commerce websites, and digital documents (like PDFs used in these services) must comply with the EN 301 549 accessibility standard.
